RAISING A COMPETENT, CONFIDENT CHILD WITH GRIT

NGO-Ek Channaly, 9 years old, Maths Level I (ASHR 5) and English Level DII (ASHR 1);
Ek Erika, mother of NGO-Ek Channaly

Perhaps the best gift parents can give to our children is a set of essential life skills. Wouldn’t we want them to pursue their own dreams and become capable members of the society?

Every year, parents in Cambodia send their children for enrichment classes so they can pick up a unique skill set during their growing years.

Channaly’s mother Erika shared why Kumon works well for her.

“Coming from a non-English speaking family, the only two languages that we spoke were French and Khmer. We felt that she has the potential, and we wanted to challenge her so we enrolled her in Kumon’s Maths and English programmes.”

Kumon was highly recommended to us, and they are well regarded for their effective worksheets. These worksheets are able to help children gain confidence through self-learning.

“I want to be an astronomer when I grow up, because Space is my favourite subject. Hence, having good mathematical skills is important for me to reach my dream.” said Channaly

Channaly attends twice a week for about an hour each time. It is also a great time for parents to see the progress and a journey that their children are making.

The improvement in her confidence, time-management, accuracy, and patience is striking. She has gone from someone who thinks and writes fast, with a lot of mistakes to now working out her answers step-by-step and more accurately. The repetition in the Kumon Method helped her to be more patient.

Today, we are very impressed with how much she has pushed through those obstacles she faced. Currently, she has advanced beyond her school grade level by five years for Maths, and one year for English.

Channaly loves her Instructor, Mr Heng, and would like to thank him for guiding her passionately. Her next study goal is to be a Maths Completer in three years’ time.

SELF-DETERMINATION AND NEVER GIVE UP MINDSET IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Kevin Phou, 11 years old, Maths Level I (ASHR 3)

Children are born with unlimited potential. Every child can excel by developing his or her ability through study at the “just-right” level. That is the reason I say “Give It A Try! or you will never discover your true potential.” – Toru Kumon, founder of the Kumon Method.

Kevin aims to be a businessman when he grows up, and he knows that having good calculation and problem-solving skills are important to help him achieve his dream.

His journey in Kumon started two years ago, and the initial stage was never easy, especially when he faced challenging questions. But today, he has grown into a faster and smarter learner in school. He is also able to use his skills and knowledge to help his friends in their schoolwork.

“Sometimes, the worksheets are harder than I thought, but through the Kumon Method, I have developed the self-determination and never give up mind-set, have helped me to overcome these challenging moments. I am also able to handle materials that are three years above my school grade level,” said Kevin.

He also wants to thank his Instructor for his encouragement and making him a better learner in school.

LEARNING THROUGH EXAMPLES EPITOMISES SELF-LEARNING

Hay Kolinie, 11 years old, Maths Level J (ASHR 3) and English Level GI (ASHR 1)

As Kumon students study beyond their grade level in school, it is not unusual for them to face difficulties, since they are studying concepts that they have yet to be taught in school.

It is the same for Hay Kolinie, who is three years ahead of school grade level in Kumon Maths and one year ahead in Kumon English, when she studies advanced materials in Kumon. When facing difficulties in her Kumon worksheets, she studies the examples provided in the worksheets carefully and work out the answer.

“As I’m doing advanced materials compared with school, it’s difficult but I can study the examples on my own,” said the 11-year-old.

This was what our founder, Toru Kumon, envisaged when he started Kumon.

“Kumon is an education method that enables students to become independent people. It is for this reason that our worksheets are structured to help students advance on their own, even when it comes to content that they have not yet studied in school. You should always keep this in mind when instructing your students,” Toru Kumon wrote in Yamabiko, a long running publication for Kumon Instructors.

She was beaming when told us that enrolling in Kumon helped her improve in her studies, as she was not doing well in school, but having enrolled in Kumon, she is doing well and could even help her school mates. She credits her improvement to her Kumon Instructor for guiding her and helping her be more confident in herself.

The aspiring chef told us that Kumon helped her be more confident and this confidence can eventually extend to her dream of becoming a chef as she can confidently share the ingredients and the way she uses them to cook.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR A BIGGER DREAM

Sy Onneta, 9 years old, Maths Level G (ASHR 3) and English Level EII (ASHR 1)

Nine-year-old Sy Onneta aspires to be a computer scientist when she grows up. She has already been told by her uncle that she needs to be really good in physics and maths to be a scientist. But the aspiring computer scientist is feeling bullish about achieving her dreams as she feels that the Kumon Maths and English programmes she has been doing are helpful in helping her fulfil her ambition.

In fact, she said that Kumon helped her excel in school and become one of the top students in school. She also found that her school worksheets became easier to handle. When Onnetta was in grade two, her teacher found her to be really smart and asked her to be her assistant to help and explain the school worksheets to her peers, as well as answering their questions.

But her Kumon journey has not always been a figurative walk in the park.

“When I was in Level B in Kumon Maths, the questions became harder and harder. I overcame them by studying the examples and believing I could do it,” Onneta, who is three years ahead of her school grade level for Maths and one year ahead for English, explained.

Knowing the challenges that advanced students face, she has some words of encouragement to her fellow Kumon students.

“If things get hard, don’t give up. Start by reviewing your answers, understanding your problems, believing that you can do it and you will,” was her rallying call to her friends.

Other than the worksheets and the examples, another integral part of Onneta’s Kumon life has been her Instructor, and she is thankful for her Kumon Instructor.

When asked if she wanted to say anything to her Kumon Instructor, “thanks for being here for me, helping me and helping everyone else,” was what she had to say.
